Most people would think that a lot of my makeup artist work consists of impactful makeup with lashes, pink cheeks, sculpted contour and glossy lips but in fact I spend a lot of time focusing on creating barely there male grooming.
I have been lucky to work with some amazing male talent including, Robert Bathurst, Eliud Kipchoge, Nigel Farage, Declan McKenna, The Fellas Podcast hosts and many more.
The key areas I focus on to create a seamless and unnoticeable look are;
You want the skin to look healthy, glowing and give the appearance of having a few more hours of sleep than these busy men have actually had!
Products I always reach to;
This is a great light moisturiser with a cooling effect on the skin.
Hydrates the eyes and light reflects to help cover any dark circles.
Unlike with my makeup looks on women who want a more dewy look. On men it’s important to reduce any shin, especially on camera.
The makeup products I use are of course all very light coverage as the aim is for no one to notice they have any on – just look naturally great!
Light coverage and super blend able, sinks into the skin while giving a freshness under the eyes and help cover any small blemishes/ dark spots.
Perfect powder for on camera as it blurs the skin while keeping any oil/ shine at bay. But as it’s a light weight powder won’t look cakey or powdery on the skin.
Men are much less likely to be found at the brow bars so often a bit of brow control is needed so that they don’t look to fluffy/ unkempt on camera. So some clear gel and maybe a small trim works a treat.
Male grooming doesn’t just stop at makeup I also style hair. Most of the work I do with men is corporate so they often have very well kept, short hair so styling is minimal.
I use a range of gels/ serums/ sprays depending on the hair type and style but these are some of my favourites;
Super lightweight so doesn’t look heavy shiny on camera but does a great job at controlling any fly aways.
This is for a more slick look and this gel is super strong so this will be holding the whole shoot!

We are now in the full swing of winter and all that comes with it – including changes to our skin. Some absolute must haves to battle the cold and keep your skin from drying out are as follows;
Skin Food Weleda
This is such a must have in the winter months. I use this mainly at night to rehydrate my skin while asleep. This is also because this is a very
thick cream and doesn’t work well as a base under makeup. But is the most hydrating moisturiser I have found to date.
Tatcha Dewy Skin Cream
This is the most perfect under makeup base for the cold season. Really hydrating but isn’t greasy and sinks into the skin beautifully, so not to disturb makeup. It’s also made with natural ingredients so if your skin is irritated with the central heating, it won’t cause anymore irritation.
La Roche – Posay SPF
Just because the sun isn’t blaring down and 30 degrees doesn’t mean there isn’t damaging UV Rays coming through. Yes there is less sun damage in cloudy weather but keep consistent with your spf and keep those wrinkles away!
Naturium Balm
I have honestly owned every lip balm there is and I can safely say these are the best. I love the tinted pinky ones for a no makeup day and Ioften use the clear one as a gloss to give my lips some extra hydration. Stays on super well with eating/ drinking and really keeps the lips hydrated. 10/10.
With wedding season around the corner, I am currently knee deep in hair & makeup trials for my lovely brides.
A lot of the questions I get asked from my brides is what advice I have for what they should be doing to prepare them for the big day.
It used to be just gyming, eating healthy and generally looking after yourself. However in this day and age with hydra facials, laser facials, Botox, profhilo etc the list of ‘tweakments’ and appearance boosters never ends.
So I thought I would give my future brides a few simple but helpful tips to help prepare you for the big day.
1. Keep it simple
The number one concern from most brides is their skin. The nightmares and dread of a breakout, oily or dry skin on your wedding day will send you mad! Often resulting in feeling it imperative to have invasive facials, peels, laser etc. When really this could have the opposite affect and really aggravate your skin and cause the dreaded break outs.
My best advice is keep to your normal skin care routine and if you want to add anything to your routine, add it months in advance so your skin can get used to it and not create any irritation.
2. Stay Hydrated
Our skin and hair are both effected by our hydration levels. If you are wanting that flawless glass skin and shiny hair on your day, the best way to achieve that before any moisturisers or makeup is to simply stay hydrated by drinking a lot of water.
To help keep your skin super hydrated I would recommend the Weleda Skin Food original or Tatcha Dewy Skin cream.
For extra luscious locks I would recommend the Olaplex no.3 hair mask. This will also keep your hair looking shiny and reduce breakage.
3. Avoid the Temptation of a Quick fix
The aesthetics industry is bigger than ever and the temptation of getting tweakments to boost your confidence is understandably increasing.
I have definitely noticed a lot of my brides wanting to get work done including, filler, Botox and profhilo purely for their wedding day.
If you have been visiting aesthetics clinics for a while and already have work done I suggest to continue with it as per usual.
However to be getting work done purely for your wedding could result in disappointment. As if these are ‘quick fixes’ you may not get the results you had hoped for. This could be down to a spontaneous appointment with a doctor you haven’t properly researched or having high expectations of only to be left with undesirable results.
Skin care is a key part in the perfect makeup look. Without a great base to work on the makeup can look cakey, patchy or oily, no matter the expensive products or professional application.
During the winter period with the icy temperatures, strong winds and central heating, it is no surprise that our skin is crying out for some hydration.
Some of my essentials to fight the winter elements and keep your skin hydrated and protected from the cold weather are as follows:
Dr Paw Paw lip balm
An essential to have in your hand bags, coat pockets and in the bedside table.
There’s nothing worse than dry cracked lips when applying your favourite Christmas red lippy.
Weleda Skin Food
A cheap and cheerful option to many more expensive moisturisers on the market.
They have a light option which I recommend under makeup. It’s a lovely base but not too heavy to disrupt the makeup.
For a night time injection of hydration their original formula is brilliant. Apply this generously before bed and wake up with hydrated plump skin ready for the day.
Bioderma 50 spf
Although it may be grey, dreary and pitch black mid afternoon that is no reason to stop using your SPF.
Bioderma is an amazing brand and really focuses on the science of skincare. This spf unlike many does not have a sticky residue and is also moisturising. Which is perfect under makeup.
Keep slapping on that spf girls! 75% of ageing is from UV rays.
Glossier Future Dew
If you are more of a serum user, this is an absolute must have.
Super hydrating but no oily finish!
Great for all skin types and super gentle on the skin for anyone with more sensitive skin.
I hope this keeps those cracked lips and dry skin at bay.
Merry Christmas and hopefully see you all for glam next year.
I am lucky enough to have worked with Dr Rhona for nearly 3 years now and we have created some amazing looks for shoots and YouTube.
Recently Rhona was featured on This Morning and Piers Morgan Uncensored. What I focus on with TV compared to our other looks, is that the skin really looks like skin so has a dewy fresh look while not looking too shiny in the lights.
For both tv appearances I used Charlotte Tilbury My Beautiful Skin foundation, this gives a medium coverage but a light fresh look to the skin. The lights on set are very bright and can make the most matte skin look shiny so I used Laura Mercier Translucent powder and Nyx Pore Filler primer to keep the skin from shining in the camera.
I use a lighter contour than on our shoots we normally do as the camera can often make makeup look heavier than it is. For this I used the Refy cream bronzers to create a lightly sculpted look with out causing heaviness.
As Dr Rhona is a dental professional we thought having hair back and smooth would be perfect to look professional while keeping up Rhonas top glamorous dentist image.
I used the GHD curve wand for the smooth waves on the This Morning Appearance and the GHD flat iron Straighteners for the silky straight look for Piers Morgan.
Keeping fly away from distracting the camera I used the Schwarzkopf Max Hold hair spray to keep it smooth and sleek.

Years of trial and error has led me to my perfect bridal makeup kit.
Natural and Glowing skin
I love a natural glow and a light coverage on a bride which always has me reaching for Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin or L’Oréal True Match. This allows me to enhance the natural features of a bride and make them look and feel their best and achieve a timeless look that suits the bride’s taste and skin type.
Rosey Glowing cheeks
Nars Orgasm is a must have bridal blush. Cream blushes I also love are Elf & Glossier. With these options, no matter what sort of look you’re trying to achieve, whether the goal is something more matt or dewier, there is nothing we can’t achieve for your special day. Nars Orgasm provides a peachy pink hint to a bride’s cheeks and is a great, universally friendly option that suits almost every skin tone! The cream blushes help to achieve that natural glowy look which most bride’s desire.
Perfect Bridal Lip
I always reach for pink undertones for a bride and Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk is an absolute classic. A pillow talk liner dupe I have recently discovered is ‘Frenchie’ by Morphe. This provides a fresh and romantic look and is an easy to wear and incredibly flattering colour to wear which is perfect for your wedding day.

I’m Emily, a professional makeup artist based in London. I have worked on music videos with artists such as Anne Marie, Little Mix, Declan McKenna and Josie Man. These were fantastic experiences for me, and I can’t wait for more opportunities to transpire!
Music videos are always such a fun project as there is so much creativity involved. The possibilities are endless and the opportunity to be innovative allows me to explore new ideas and processes and fall even more in love with makeup. I love the different elements that come with designing a character’s makeup.
The artists I have worked with are all from such different genres. I have worked from character makeup for a ‘devil’ Margaret Thatcher, all the way through to ‘girls messy night out’ looks. There is no creative limit to what makeup can be achieved and I’ll try my best to ensure you’re happy with end result.
